The Swiss Government has announced its Excellence Scholarships to be awarded to graduates from various fields with the to pursue masters, doctoral or postdoctoral research in Switzerland, an opportunity to study at one of the public-funded universities or renowned institutions in the country.
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship programme is offered annually for Ph.D., Postdoctoral, and Research for Foreign Students from various continents; Africa, Asia and other Countries to Study in Switzerland. However, this year has witnessed a more resounding development as more countries has been included to benefit from the scholarship award.
The Swiss government, through its Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), offered postgraduate scholarships to foreign students and researchers who applied for the scholarships. The research scholarship is available to post-graduate researchers in any discipline ( applicants should have obtained a master’s degree as a minimum).
It’s important to add that applicants must be willing to move to Switzerland to pursue research or further studies at the doctoral or post-doctoral level of education.
The scholarships are offered to deserving applicants for research or study at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences, and the two federal institutes of technology. Only applicants nominated by an academic mentor at one of these higher education institutions will be considered.

The scholarship type set to be awarded by the Swiss government through the Federal Commission for Scholarship (FCS) is for Masters, Doctoral or Post-Doctoral.

It’s important to note that the Swiss government’s Federal Commission for Scholarship has noted three criteria to assesses scholarship applications. These includes:
- Candidate profile
- Quality of the research project or artistic work
- Synergies and potential for future research cooperation
In addition, applications are subject to preliminary selection by the Swiss government authorities and/or the Swiss diplomatic representation. The semi-finalists are then assessed by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) which equally takes the final decision.

Eligible Countries?
According to the Swiss Government and the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students, all countries are eligible for the scholarship awards.
Eligibility: Applicants for the Scholarships must:
- Be a holder of a university degree (Bachelors’s/Masters) on commencement of the scholarship.
- Â Posses the capacity to demonstrate their academic abilities and what they aim to achieve.
Have contacted the institution and/or the professor supervising their period of research. Universities may request supplementary information and/or set certain additional conditions to determine whether or not you qualify for admission.
- Be born on or after 1st January 1987 (35 years above).
- Be vast in the language of instruction (French, German, Italian, or English) in order to draw full benefit from their studies in Switzerland.
